Ear Infections in Fort Collins

ear infections

While it is common for children to have ear infections, it is not actually a normal part of the growing process. Symptoms of ear infections include loss of sleep and appetite, pain, difficulty hearing, vomiting, and fever. Many parents assume that these infections are caused by a bacteria and run to the doctor for antibiotics. Truthfully, only about half of ear infections are bacterial, while the rest are viral or caused by an underlying structural problem, neither of which will respond to antibiotics.

If your child is suffering from recurring chronic ear infections, he/she may have a structural issue, which can be treated by the chiropractors at Advanced Healthcare in Fort Collins.

Conventional Diagnosis and Treatments of Ear Infections

As mentioned above, an ear infection can be the result of a bacteria, but it is often caused by a virus which does not respond to antibiotics. Sometimes, even when the infection does clear up with antibiotics, it may continue to reoccur due to a structural problem. The best way to conclude which organism is causing the infection, is to remove a sample of fluid from the middle ear with a needle. Thankfully, since this procedure is invasive and expensive, most doctors will not subject children to it.

Because of this, doctors still continue to prescribe antibiotics, even though this may not be the best route, and overuse of antibiotics can actually cause a decrease in their effectiveness on the human body. Another option that doctors turn to is the insertion of ear tubes, also known as tympanostomy tubes. This invasive procedure is surgical and requires general anesthesia, and these tubes may not even be effective or necessary.

Chiropractic Treatment for Ear Infections

Unlike traditional doctors, our Fort Collins chiropractors are trained to find structural issues that would result in chronic ear infections. The cause is often related to misalignments in the spine which lead to tightness in the muscles of the neck and back, which interferes with the nervous system’s ability to communicate with the inner ear. This can lead to improper fluid drainage and a blockage of the inner ear, resulting in infections.

Our gentle chiropractic treatments in Fort Collins can relieve chronic ear infections by resolving the root of the problem, rather than just treating the symptoms.
