What is Functional Medicine?

Functional Medicine in Fort Collins CO

If you’re experiencing  gastrointestinal problems  or stomach discomfort on a regular basis, aren’t sleeping well, have little energy and struggle to complete basic tasks, functional medicine may be the treatment you’re seeking.

Functional medicine identifies the root causes of chronic conditions and natural treatments for them, instead of addressing only symptoms. It’s effective for such chronic conditions as:

  • Hypothyroidism – an underactive thyroid doesn’t produce enough hormones that regulate metabolism, resulting in sluggishness, weight gain and other symptoms.
  • Digestive disorders such as gastroesophagealreflux disease (GERD), a digestive disorder that affects the ring of muscle between the esophagus and stomach, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), which affects the large intestine (colon) and commonly causes cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, diarrhea and constipation.
  • Type 2 diabetes – usually diagnosed in obese adults and juveniles when the body resists insulin or can’t use it efficiently.
  • Autoimmune disorders – These conditions maydecrease the body’s ability to fight infections or cause it to attack its own tissues.
  • Management of Type 1 diabetes – often diagnosed in childhood, though now it’s being diagnosed in teens and adults, the body attacks itself, preventing insulin production.
  • Poor function of organs such as the pancreas, liver, bladder, intestines, kidneys, etc.

Functional medicine complements chiropractic care, physical and massage therapy as it reduces pain and inflammation, making it easier to restore joint motion and improve muscle function.

It often involves diet changes and taking supplements to flush out toxins, strengthen deficit organs and decrease excess organ function, creating an optimal environment in which the body can heal itself.

What to expect
A consultation with Dr. Rob Smigelski, D.C., involves:

  • An in-depth health history, evaluation, and lab work that may include bloodwork, saliva and urine tests;
  • A follow-up appointment in which Dr. Rob will review lab results, give his analysis and recommend a customized treatment.
  • Ongoing discussions, tests and evaluations to determine whether the treatment is working and whether adjustments are needed.

Adam Bode

Five-year Advanced Healthcare patient Adam Bode has Type 1 diabetes and hypothyroidism. He has always been finicky when it comes to his health, but he had room for improvement. When Advanced Healthcare began offering functional medicine, Adam decided more information wouldn’t hurt.

A consultation with Dr. Rob and bloodwork led to supplements and changing his diet beyond just eliminating gluten, which he had already done. In just two months Adam has lost 10 pounds, been able to lower his thyroid medicine dose, and cut his insulin use down 25 percent to 50 percent a day while maintaining or improving control of his blood sugar. “I never wanted for food or felt hungry,” he said, adding he’s experienced less bloating, gas and uncomfortable feelings.

And he’s never felt alone. “Dr. Rob is extremely supportive and always available,” Adam said. “If I ask him about replacement foods, he researches them. It’s a nice give-and-take exchange.”

Heather Kahl

Although Advanced Healthcare was addressing Heather Kahl’s back issues, she was plagued with other problems for which medical doctors had no answers: low energy, chronic illnesses, fatigue, weight gain, stomach issues, dark circles under her eyes, hair loss and anxiety.

Blood tests and a hair analysis revealed Heather had an immune disorder, high levels of white blood cells indicating an infection or inflammation somewhere in the body, leaky gut (bloating, gas, cramps, food sensitivities, and aches and pains), high levels of aluminum in her body from the rod and screws in her back, and vitamin D and other deficiencies.

Following Dr. Rob’s recommendation, Heather went on a 30-day cleanse diet and took numerous supplements, as well as stopped using products containing aluminum on her body. Heather has since lost 10 pounds and most of her other conditions have all but disappeared.

“He was very supportive through these 30 days,” Heather said of Dr. Rob. “If I had a questions or concerns, he was there to answer them. I was on the verge of wanting to give up and Advanced Healthcare brought me back to life. I feel like myself again and this process has helped me have a better outlook on life and my health.”
