What is a Disc injury?
Between each of the vertebrae there is a little pad known as an intervertebral disc. Each disc consists of a rigid outer ring and a soft, gel-like center. The discs have the dual purpose of keeping the bones of the vertebrae separate but also joining them together. The intervertebral discs are like cushions or shock absorbers, which prevent the bones from rubbing against each other while you are moving or lifting objects. Without these discs, you would not be able to move your upper torso at all. There are several disc injuries which can make spinal movement painful and difficult including:
- A protruding disc: When this occurs, the gel from the disc is pushed out or bulging from its normal location.
- A herniated disc: This happens when a disc ruptures and the gel is pushed completely outwards.
- A disc extrusion: This is the worst type of disc injury and occurs when the gel balloons extensively out of the vertebrae, or breaks off completely from the disc.
Symptoms of a Disc Injury
All of the above mentioned types of disc injuries can result in significant back pain, decreased range of motion, and numbness. At Advanced Healthcare in Fort Collins, our chiropractors can treat the symptoms of disc injuries, herniated discs, and slipped discs including, but not limited to:
